Research Analyst - Data Science/Analytics

The Programme

The role contributes primarily to research and consulting projects as part of a research team.  
 
Research analysts will be tasked with data collection and analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data based on project requirements.  
 
They will then derive key insights from these analyses and compile them into slides or reports for the final project deliverables. Analysts will work with the support and guidance of more experienced staff on the team.  
 
Once given an assignment, analysts are expected to work independently with minimal oversight.  
 
It's essential for applicants to recognize that our research domain necessitates a continuous commitment to skill improvements in both quantitative and qualitative domains. 

What You Will Do

  • Undertake applied research on issues in (but not limited to) macroeconomics, microeconomics, empirical policy studies, sustainable development, societal well-being, planetary health, future of work, climate change, poverty and inequality, technological foresighting, and etc. 
  • Contribute to consulting projects based on project requirements. 
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of research outputs and publications, including policy briefs, working papers, conference papers, book chapters, and publications in peer-reviewed journals. 
  • Undertake the collection and analysis of data (types of data include survey, time series, cross-sectional, panel, focus groups, in-depth interviews, etc.), including ensuring effective security, storage and distribution of data, records, and reports. 
  • Derive and deliver key insights for final project deliverables such as slides and reports. 
  • Undertake data modelling and statistical analysis using the following software: R, EViews, STATA, or PYTHON 
  • Support other project teams where necessary. 
  • Attending conferences and workshops for professional development. 
  • Ability to conduct workshops and training for staff and students in the Institute and University.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree with a focus on empirical analysis. 
  • Entry level role. Fresh graduates are welcome to apply. 
  • The ideal candidate would have a good understanding of policy analysis, and theoretical foundations in any of the three domains IGSC works in: Economic, Societal, and Environmental.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills. 
  • Sound knowledge of the latest data analysis methods and familiarity with data structures and processing. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and R, Eviews, STATA, or PYTHON (other relevant statistical software can also be considered) is required. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to interact with a diverse range of stakeholders. 
    • Fluency in English is a core requirement. 
    • Fluency in Bahasa Malaysia or an additional language is a bonus. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work as an effective member of a team as well as the ability to exercise high levels of independence, judgment, and initiative. 
  • Excellent organizational skills, including ability to set priorities, time management, and planning to meet tight deadlines
